What Should Your Family Budget Include
Sometimes creating a budget can be a challenge. It is hard to know what categories need to be included in your family budget worksheet. You can start by finding some good budgeting software online or you can create a sample budget form yourself using Excel. If you chose to create your own, you will need to know what categories are necessary.
First, you will need to think of all your monthly recurring bills. These are things like, mortgage, electricity, gas, water, trash, phone, cable and club fees as well as credit card payments. If you are looking to pay off credit card bills, you may want to check out Dave Ramsey’s books to see how to approach your credit card debt in your budget to start paying it off.
Next, it is important to also put money away every month into savings. You will need to create an emergency fund. This is to cover any unexpected events that may pop up. If you have to take from this fund you should put it back as soon as possible. After that savings is set you will also need to establish savings to cover you for a long time.
Another overlooked part of any family budget worksheet are those expenses that may only show up a few times in a year or once a month. For example about every three months you will need to change the oil for the car. This typically costs about $20 to $30. Instead of having to borrow that money from somewhere else in the budget, you can include it under a category called “Car Expenses”. If you have two cars and your oil change costs $25 each time, you will need to spend about $200 a year.
If you divide $200 by 12 months you will get a monthly amount of roughly $17. If you put that money aside every month when the time comes for an oil change, you won’t be caught off-guard and will already have that money in the budget. This same idea can be applied towards Christmas or family vacations. Saving throughout the year can take away a lot of the stress.
As you can see, family budgets can be very helpful and take away the surprise factor with certain unexpected daily events.
